Hybrid-Only 2025 Toyota Camry Production Is Finally Underway

Key Takeaways

  • Production of the 2025 Toyota Camry begins at the automaker’s Kentucky plant.
  • More than 11 million Camrys have been built in the United States.
  • The hybrid-only Camry is part of Toyota’s electrification strategy; a battery-electric three-row SUV will be built at the Kentucky facility.

The ninth-generation Camry has finally rolled off the assembly line at Toyota’s Kentucky-based production facility, carrying on a strong tradition of US-built Camrys, the first of which were manufactured in the late ’80s. Available exclusively with a hybrid drivetrain, the newcomer is a vital part of Toyota’s multi-pathway electrification strategy, which includes hybrids, PHEVs, and electric vehicles, and the fact that no pure-combustion option is offered for this important model heralds the new normal.

Toyota Kentucky has assembled more than 11 million Camry models over the years, highlighting how popular the Japanese sedan is with American consumers. In 2023, the Camry was the eighth best-selling passenger vehicle in the United States. It wasn’t the most popular sedan or Toyota, however, with the Model 3 and RAV4 filling those spots, respectively.

Investments In Kentucky Plant Will Further Toyota’s Electrification Efforts

The Kentucky plant is a critical component of Toyota’s continued US success. Recently, the automaker poured $1.3 million into the facility to further the company’s automotive efforts. This includes preparing to assemble a new battery-electric SUV with three-row seating. In total, the manufacturer has invested $10 billion towards upgrading the factory.

While Toyota has hesitated to jump on the EV bandwagon, the poorly-received bZ4X has been available in the US for some time, and Lexus offers the electric RZ crossover. Speaking to CarBuzz earlier this year, David Christ, general manager of Toyota USA, said, “We have always been committed to building BEVs. And you’re going to see more BEVs from us in the future.”

New Camry Is Key To Toyota’s Success

Aside from the three-row SUV, touted as an electric-only Highlander replacement, Toyota also has plans to introduce several other EVs, including sedans and pickups. We’re guessing the Camry will eventually get a battery-powered option or successor in the coming years. Returning to the sedan, pricing for the 2025 Camry starts at $28,400. Four trims are available, all of which can be specified with AWD for $1,525.

The New Toyota Camry Is The Most Important Car In The World Right Now

Toyota’s update to its midsize sedan is a huge sign that the state of the automotive landscape has shifted in a big way.

Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky, said production of the 2025 Camry was only possible with the team members: “Starting production of the new Camry is another proof point that Toyota is committed to providing secure employment and has been for nearly four decades. We continue to stay true to that promise by reinvesting profits in this plant and preparing our team members for future production opportunities, including a variety of electrified vehicles.”
