Stellantis’ Opel and sister brand Vauxhall have revealed their new Grandland compact crossover, scheduled to go on sale this fall

  • The new Opel Grandland EV gets up to 700 km (434 miles) of range.
  • Two different internal combustion hybrids are also going to be available.
  • The entire car is a dramatic shift up market from the previous generation.

The all-new 2024 Opel Grandland has arrived, marking a bold departure from the last generation. Set to be available later this year as both an Opel across mainland Europe and as a Vauxhall in the UK, the Grandland brings with it a slew of luxury features that elevate it into a unique new space.

As we reported all the way back in November of 2023, the Grandland will be offered in both all-electric and combustion-powered options. Here’s a closer look at Stellantis’ latest compact crossover for Europe, positioned above the recently introduced (and more affordable) Frontera.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new Grandland is significantly larger. It gains an additional 6.8 inches (173 mm) in overall length, 0.7 inches (19 mm) in height, and 2.5 inches (64 mm) in width. With these increases, the Grandland now measures in at 183.1 inches (4,650 mm) long, 75 inches (1,905 mm) wide, and 65.4 inches (1,660 mm) tall.

It also rides on a long wheelbase of 109.6 inches (2,784 mm). As a result, boot space increases by 36 liters, and rear-seat passengers benefit from an additional 0.8 inches (20 mm) of legroom compared to the outgoing generation.

EV And ICE Options

Built on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform (shared with the Peugeot 3008), the Grandland boasts versatility. Like its larger sibling, this platform can accommodate various powertrain and drivetrain layouts.

In the electric versions, the Grandland offers a choice between a 73 kWh or a 98 kWh battery pack. Utilizing a 400V architecture, these EVs can DC fast charge up to 160 kW, achieving an impressive range of up to 700 km (435 miles). While not confirmed now, expect a base FWD version at launch along with a dual-motor version coming down the line after that.

Perhaps the more interesting news is that a combustion version is coming too and it includes a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system, with a plug-in hybrid variant to follow later offering around 50 miles of pure-electric range. Opel says that it plans to be an EV-only brand by 2028, but the recent cooling off in that market might have it rethinking that strategy. For now, the hybrid option could prove a serious win.

The features that come with this latest Grandland certainly won’t hamper sales either. They include a new illuminated logo at the front its ‘Vizor’ style front along with Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD lighting, a two-tone floating roof, and sharp wheel-arch feature lines.

The cabin is full of upgrades too, including an expansive 16-inch infotainment screen, a heads-up display, and some seriously trick seats. These seats get powered side bolsters, ventilation, and even a massaging function. There’s a slot on the front seats specifically designed to relieve pressure on the tailbone too.

“The new Grandland is a milestone for Opel. With it, every Opel without exception is now available electrically,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl. “This is a big step in our electric offensive. The new Grandland was designed and developed in Rüsselsheim and will be built in Eisenach. The relationship to the Opel Experimental is unmistakable. It offers innovations that were first seen on this extraordinary concept car. The new Grandland will therefore strengthen our position in the important C-SUV segment”.

While Opel hasn’t confirmed a launch date yet, expect the Grandland to go on sale this fall. Additional details about the internal combustion engine (ICE) range and fuel efficiency will likely arrive before then.
