The new lap time shaves 5.5 seconds off of the GTD’s previous record as the fastest American production car at the infamous German track

- The Mustang GTD just beat its own best time at the Nurburgring by over five seconds.
- It managed a lap of just 6:52:072, the fastest an American production car has ever posted.
- Ford says the Mustang GTD now is the fourth fastest production sports car to test there.
Ford just made good on its promise from late last year. That’s when it set the record at the Nurburgring as the first American car company to have a production vehicle lap the track in under seven minutes with the Mustang GTD. Still, the brand said it knew the car could go faster as track conditions weren’t optimal, and it promised a return.
“We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back,” said CEO Jim Farley at the time. True to his word, that’s what they did, and now, they have an even more impressive record to boast about.

When Ford first set the record, it did so with a time of 6:57.685. That was good enough to rank in the top 10 production sports cars of all time. The new 6:52.072 lap elevates it in the top five. Notably, Ford says this makes it the fourth fastest production sports car at the track. We count five total, but perhaps it’s not including the absolutely bonkers Mercedes-AMG One that did it in 6:35.18. That may be fair, as not even the $350,000 GTD can hold a candle to a hypercar with an F1-derived powertrain – not to mention a lot higher sticker price.
Regardless of where it sits, this figure is absolutely impressive. How did Ford shave that much time off the clock at the scariest, and most difficult to tackle, track in the world? Certainly, better conditions played a role. In addition, it says that it applied what it learned during the first record-breaking attempt. That means tuning everything it could for this track, including the power profile, the aerodynamics, the ABS, and more. One thing is certain: when customers get their hands on this car, they will be very smug about their latest acquisition.
