Renault’s Boreal SUV Hides A Secret Under Its Fancy New Name

  • Renault has announced a new C-segment SUV named Boreal.
  • It will be offered in more than 70 markets outside of Europe.
  • The model could be a rebadged version of the Dacia Bigster.

Renault has announced its upcoming C-segment SUV will be unveiled in the coming months and called the Boreal. It’s slated to be offered in more than 70 markets outside of Europe and will first be launched in Latin America.

adpushup.que.push(function() {

} else {

}
});

Billed as a milestone in Renault’s International Game Plan 2027, the Boreal follows the Kardian which was introduced in late 2023. The company isn’t saying much about the model at this point, but stated it “illustrates the brand’s fresh worldwide ambition” as well as their “upmarket shift.”

The debut is slated to take place in Brazil and the company said they put a lot of thought into the crossover’s name. As they explained, the name is derived from boreas, which was the god of the wind in Greek mythology. Furthermore, the name is derived from “north wind” in Latin.

Renault’s Naming Strategy Manager, Sylvia dos Santos, said this makes Boreal a good name for an SUV as it implies strength and a “status enhancing design.” She went on to say it evokes thoughts of aurora borealis, which are better known as the Northern Lights.

In the end, the company said the name “perfectly encapsulates the values that the SUV stands for: technology, status, and comfort.” They went on to say the Boreal is “unprecedented in the lineup” and will be an “invitation to escape and discover endless horizons.”

Marketing hyperbole aside, rumors have suggested the Boreal could be a rebadged version of the Dacia Bigster. This shouldn’t be too surprising as the aforementioned Kardian was a lightly revised version of the Dacia Sandero.

If this happens to be the case, we can expect the Boreal to be an affordable crossover that offers a rugged design as well as a minimalist interior with a 10.1-inch infotainment system as well as a 7- or 10-inch digital instrument cluster. The European model also offers an assortment of engines ranging from a 1.2-liter three-cylinder mild hybrid with 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) to a full hybrid featuring a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and 153 hp (115 kW / 155 PS).
