Pagani Will Rebuild Zondas To Meet Customers’ Desires

Sometimes it’s difficult for a band to release new music; many fans just want to hear the classics. Italian supercar maker Pagani exists in a similar predicament, as wealthy customers still want to buy the company’s original model, the Zonda. Even after the Huayra (the Zonda’s replacement) came and went, and a new car called the Pagani Utopia is currently available with a manual transmission, Pagani has struggled to close the Zonda chapter of its business. So it’s not even going to try anymore.

Horacio Pagani

San Cesario sul Panaro, Italy

Speaking with the Italian automaker at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, CarBuzz learned that while Pagani won’t make any “brand-new” Zonda models from scratch, customers can still send in an existing car to be thoroughly worked on and reinvigorated. In other words, the Zonda may live on forever.

“The chapter is never closed. Our customers want to keep the value of their cars. When you buy a Pagani, it’s an experience for life. So we make sure to keep the cars as updated as possible.”

How To Get A “New” Zonda

Pagani specified that while it will not build a new Zonda from the ground up, customers can recommission an existing chassis to suit their taste. In fact, the company revealed a 1 of 1 example earlier this year, which was built for the Chinese market. The car was made by Pagani’s Unico division, which specializes in revamping older models.

“With the donor chassis, you can completely upgrade the car. This offers customers who buy a second-hand Pagani the chance to start the personalization journey again,” Berridi explained. “They can update the composite materials, create bespoke wings, bodies, and interiors.”

There’s a lot to love about this custom Pagani Zonda, but this one feature is what makes us want this one more than ever.

“We just did the delivery of the Zonda MY, which used the donor chassis of a Zonda F,” he added. “He changed the body, the paint, and he asked for a gated shifter that was never used on the Zonda. These are customers that challenge us and keep us on our toes.”

Still A High Demand For Old Models

The first Zonda rolled out of Pagani’s factory in 1999, and demand hasn’t slowed down since its arrival. In fact, with modern supercars becoming ever more complicated and automated, we imagine that prices for analog models like the Zonda will climb indefinitely. A Zonda 760 LM Roadster just sold for over $11 million at auction, making it one of the most expensive Pagani models ever sold.

“The aftersales department is still growing. The demand is very high for this. Then we have the restoration, which gives a second life to the car,” he said. “The Zonda chapter is finished. We have delivered 140 chassis of the road Zonda, 15 chassis of the R models. The last Zonda was the Arrivederci, so the chapter is closed. Now the Huayra interest is very high. That’s why we can do these few-off series. We have just started production of the Huayra R Evo Roadster. The first car is already in the paint shop.”

Pagani will continue to reveal new models, like the Utopia, but the company seems to have found a niche in keeping its older models updated and customized. So if you can’t wait for a next-gen Pagani, you can still get an old one built to your liking.
