Honda’s EV Sales Shoot Up, Which Is Good News For GM

When it comes to electric vehicle development, General Motors is one of the clear leaders. Cadillac has more EVs in its line-up than most other luxury automakers, and Chevrolet has been a leader in affordable EVs since the Bolt EV in 2017 and the current Equinox EV. It’s enough of a leader that Honda leaned on the company to create the Honda Prologue and the Acura ZDX, which are closely related to GM’s midsize electric SUVs on the Ultium platform: Blazer EV and Lyriq. As The Drive initially spotted, though, the Honda- and Acura-branded models are outpacing those GM models. Each automaker should be happy, though, since sales for almost all of their Ultium-based models are selling better than before.

Honda Versus GM

So far this year, Honda has sold 16,317 Prologues, which is most similar to the Chevy Blazer EV. The Chevy, on the other hand, has sold 12,736 examples. The Acura ZDX, which is related and comparable to the Cadillac Lyriq, has sold 10,335 examples. Cadillac isn’t far behind, though, having sold 9,317 Lyriqs this year.

Despite the Hondas topping their GM counterparts, the company still doesn’t have the best-selling of the Ultium EVs. That title belongs to the entry-level Chevy Equinox EV. So far, Chevy has sold 27,749 of the SUVs, far and away the best-selling of the group. It even topped the gas-powered Blazer, although was still about 100,000 units short of combustion Equinox. Cadillac also has other EVs not shared with Honda, including the Optiq, Vistiq, and Escalade iQ, which have sold 4,940, 1,745, and 3,766 units respectively. Chevy also has the Silverado EV, and has sold 5,439 of them so far. Then GMC has the Hummer EV and the Sierra EV, and has sold 7,987 of the former and 2,773 of the latter.

Sales Are Up For Pretty Much Everyone

Even if Honda’s reworked GM EVs managed to outsell the cars they’re based on, it’s still not exactly bad news for the biggest of the Big 3, since they’re all still GM products. Not only that, but sales are up for almost every Ultium EV, regardless of what badges they wear. The Prologue and ZDX are up by truly ridiculous percentages of 963% and 2,957.7% respectively. So they’ve gone from hardly any sales to matching and exceeding some GM models in just a year. The Blazer EV is also having a great year, selling 76.1% more than the year before. The Lyriq hasn’t fared as well, actually dropping by 28.8%, but it’s also been on sale longer than any of these other models. The overall sales leader, the Equinox EV, is up by a Honda-like percentage of 2,639.3%. Plus, some of the other models we’ve mentioned, such as the Cadillac Optiq, Vistiq, Escalade iQ, and GMC Sierra EV, weren’t on sale yet last year, so every sale is a huge improvement for the year. So, in the end, Honda and GM are both big winners this year with increased EV sales across the board.
