Mercedes-AMG One Hypercars Recalled For Fire Risk

One of the hottest cars to come out of Mercedes-Benz, or more specifically Mercedes-AMG, is the AMG One. It’s powered by the closest thing to a Formula One engine possible, with its tiny turbocharged 1.6-liter V6. It makes more than 1,000 horsepower with the combination of that engine and four electric motors. Plus, it’s the fastest production car to go around the Nürburgring Nordschleife by a huge margin. Unfortunately, it seems that this Mercedes could become too hot, based on a recall issued in Germany for fire risk.

The Problem Has To Do With The Wing

According to the recall listing in the German Federal Motor Transport Authority’s (KBA) database, the recall affects nearly every AMG One that Mercedes has built. Specifically, 219 examples fall under the recall out of a total production run of 275. It also reveals that the issue has to do with the power rear wing, rather than the high-strung engine. The wing rises and descends via a hydraulic system. Apparently, one of the hydraulic lines connected to the wing may not be secured properly. This can result in the hydraulic fluid, which is flammable, leaking. Naturally, this is a particularly significant issue for a mid-engine car, which will have many hot components close to these lines. It’s not hard to see how this presents a significant fire risk.

The listing says that there are no known incidents of fire or related injuries due to this particular issue. The solution also seems fairly straightforward. A technician will inspect the hydraulic line to ensure it’s connected correctly. If it isn’t, it will be replaced.

1 Of 275 Mercedes-AMG ONE Hypercars Burns Down In Mysterious Circumstances

Mercedes is aware of the incident, but nobody knows what the cause was yet.

An AMG One Had A Brush With Fire Years Ago

While none of the 275 AMG Ones have been taken by fire due to the hydraulic line issue, there was an incident that got out of hand a few years ago. On a highway in the UK, a truck with an AMG One burned all the way down to the ground. Only the smoldering skeletons of the truck and the car were left by the time firefighters put it out. The car apparently wasn’t fully completed, and it was being transported to another facility to continue construction. It was never made clear how the fire started, particularly whether it had something to do with the car or the truck. We assumed that Mercedes constructed a replacement to fill that build slot, since the car hadn’t been completed and wasn’t delivered to the new owner.
