This Suzuki Jimny Cop Car Is The Slowest Way Catch Criminals, And We Love It

The Suzuki Jimny is an adorable little SUV. Its boxy shape and big, round headlights give the vehicle a welcoming shape. Somehow, the aesthetics combine to make the pint-sized off-roader appear eager to do whatever work the owner needs to do. Unfortunately, Suzuki hasn’t sold cars in the United States in decades, meaning the Jimny has been forbidden fruit in the country for quite a long time.

Elsewhere in the world, the Jimny remains a vital part of the Suzuki vehicle lineup. They’re highly capable compact SUVs at a fairly affordable price for their class. Plus, extensive aftermarket support means there are loads of accessories for customizing the rig for whatever task is necessary. For example, one of them is now entering police duty in Australia as a part of the Lake Macquarie Police District Crime Prevention Unit.

Emissions standards have killed another highly desirable model in Europe.

Sergeant Jim Is Ready For Duty

The Lake Macquarie Police gave its new SUV the cute name Sergeant Jim, complete with a matching license plate. The eye-catching, five-door Jimny wears the blue-and-white checkered pattern that’s common to many Australian police vehicles. Bright orange and neon yellow stripes make this rig look even more striking. The state coat of arms of New South Wales is on the front doors. It certainly looks like a proper police car, though the Jimny’s character still shines through loud and clear.

The police will use Sergeant Jim as part of a community engagement initiative. It’ll be on display at school and community events in the city of Lake Macquarie. The SUV comes at no cost to the cops because of a sponsorship agreement with Suzuki Australia. The Crime Prevention Unit’s duty is exactly what its name implies, including mitigating vehicle and boat thefts, preventing fraud, and investigating malicious damage to public property.

“Sergeant Jim is more than just a vehicle, it’s a conversation starter. In times when national crime rates are a topic of discussion, we saw an opportunity to contribute positively at a local level.”

– Suzuki Australia General Manager Michael Pachota

For a little additional context, the city of Lake Macquarie is about 93 miles north of Sydney, Australia, in the state of New South Wales. The population is over 221,000 people. The location is a tourist attraction due to the 42.5 square-mile lake and a channel providing access to the Tasman Sea.

What To Know About The Jimny

The Jimny is available in three trim levels and two body styles in Australia. All of them come with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder producing 101 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 96 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Depending on the version, a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-speed automatic transmission are available. Every example has a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

The Light trim is the base model in Australia and starts at the equivalent of $22,650. A version that just goes by the name Jimny has additional amenities such as automatic LED headlights and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system for $25,240. The range-topping XL grade has a five-door body, a nine-inch infotainment display, and rear parking sensors for $27,180.

The five-door Jimny has proven to be particularly popular for Suzuki. In Japan, the company received 50,000 orders for them in just four days, which was enough to fulfill the production capacity for three and a half years. The factory only builds a maximum of 1,200 of them per month.
