- The worker-focused Super Duty is nearly as expensive as the mighty Ranger Raptor.
- A modified 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 provides power with 206 hp and 442 lb-ft.
- The Super Duty can tow up to 9,920 lbs (4,500 kg) and offers three cab configurations.
Australia’s new Ford Ranger Super Duty promises to be the most rugged and well-rounded version of the mid-size pickup ever, offering payload and towing capacities unheard of for a truck of this size. But, all of these capabilities will come at a cost, as the Super Duty is only slightly cheaper than the all-conquering Raptor. Still, Ford would have been wise to offer the Super Duty in the US.

Pricing and Configurations
Ford has announced that the cheapest Super Duty, with a single cab-chassis design, will start at AU$82,990 (about US$53,900 at current exchange rates) before on-road costs. It will also be sold as a super cab-chassis starting at AU$86,490 (US$56,200) and in double cab-chassis guise, priced from AU$89,990 (US$58,500), or just AU$450 (US$290) less than an equivalent Ranger Raptor.

Keep in mind, those prices don’t include the cost of a tray/bed, which is an additional dealer-fit accessory. Depending on your aesthetic preferences, Ford offers a range of trays: galvanized steel, body-colored steel, and matte black steel.
The prices for the galvanized steel tray range from AU$5,966 to AU$7,121 (US$3,800 to US$4,600), while the body-colored option comes in at AU$7,176 to AU$8,331 (US$4,600 to US$5,400). If you’re into the matte black steel tray, expect to pay between AU$8,166 (US$5,300) and AU$9,376 (US$6,100). Yes, trays are apparently where the real cost lives.
The Upgrades
So, what do shoppers get for their money? Most importantly, the Ranger Super Duty has the same 9,920 lbs (4,500 kg) towing capacity as the F-150. Additionally, it the single cab-chassis has a peak payload capacity of 4,369 lbs (1,982 kg), which is more than an F-150, too. The payload for the super cab-chassis and double cab-chassis models sits at 4,179 lbs (1,896 kg) and 4,023 lbs (1,825 kg), respectively.
While the Super Duty does not get the same crazed 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 as the Raptor, it does have a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 that’s been upgraded to meet heavy-duty vehicle requirements. It delivers 206 hp (154 kW) at 3,250 rpm and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque at 1,750 rpm. The engine also now requires AdBlue and has an upgraded cooling system, which promises to be 25% more efficient than the existing 3.0-liter Ranger models.

On top of its serious towing and payload capabilities, the Ranger Super Duty steps up its off-road game with some significant improvements. Ground clearance has been bumped to 11.7 inches (299 mm), track width has expanded to 67.3 inches (1,710 mm), and it can wade through water up to 33.4 inches (850 mm) deep.
So, if you’re in the market for a truck that can haul a boat and then wade through a river without flinching, this might be your ride. Just make sure your bank account can keep up.
