New Lawsuit States Recent General Motors L87 V8 Recall Repairs Do Not Work

A recent recall of more than half a million vehicles powered by General Motors’ L87 6.2-liter V8 engine is a headache that just won’t go away. Following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors recalled the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and other models using the engine for defects that could cause it to fail. A lawsuit was filed soon after when it was found the repairs had reduced each vehicle’s fuel economy, leading to higher maintenance costs for owners.

Now, another lawsuit claims assurances made by GM that engines would either be repaired or replaced were “egregiously inadequate” and didn’t properly address the problem. Angry owners allege the affected repairs either did not work properly, or more worryingly, that replacement engines were also defective.

The Initial Problem With The 6.2-Liter V8

GM’s initial recall back in April referred to crankshaft components and bearings within the L87 version of the 6.2-liter V8 used in Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles. Per the recall, these defective parts were unable to handle friction and heat build-up, ultimately causing the engine to falter or fail completely. It’s a costly and potentially dangerous situation for owners of the following vehicles:

  • 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade / Escalade ESV
  • 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2021-2024 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2021-2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL

GM’s Problematic V8 Engine Is Causing A Lot Of Headaches

There’s a remedy for now though it’s not as concrete as one would expect.

The fix from GM was to either repair or replace engines displaying a ‘P0016’ diagnostic trouble code. Those vehicles that did not register the trouble code would get a new oil filter and filler cap installed, and the engine oil would be changed to something with thicker viscosity. GM would reimburse affected owners for any repair expenses relating to the issue, according to the recall.

The new lawsuit, initiated by Robert Houchin in Nevada (owner of a 2022 Escalade) and since joined by nine other plaintiffs from eight different States, claims that GM used “equally defective” replacement engines using bad crankshaft components and bearings that caused the problems in the first place.

As well as pushing for redesigned parts, the plaintiffs are suing GM for compensation for an alleged loss of value to their vehicles. Several in the group state that they would have reconsidered their purchase to begin with, or “certainly” would have paid less than the original asking price had they been made aware of the potential issue. One member of the group also stated that their L87 engine had been causing issues as early as 2023. It’s not known whether an official GM dealer was notified of the issue at the time.
