French automaker Alpine is busy trying to position itself as something like a French version of Porsche, with a lineup of performance-oriented sports cars and SUVs. For a while, the luxury performance market that both automakers play in was planning to almost entirely pivot to fully electric vehicles. But shifts in EV demand, government regulations, global supplies, and trade arrangements mean that automakers are reconsidering their EV destiny, and now trying to find more ways to keep combustion engines in new cars for at least another couple of decades, including Alpine.
