The Engler Mosslr Is The Stirling Moss SLR Sequel Mercedes Won’t Build

Sixteen years ago, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren launched the wildest version of their jointly-developed supercar: the SLR Stirling Moss. It was a speedster version of the car, lacking a windshield, just like the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR that Sir Stirling Moss drove to victory in that year’s Mille Miglia. Mercedes only built 75 examples of the open-top exotic, and it never created a successor. The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed certainly has some similarities with a lack of a windshield, but it’s more of a tribute to modern F1 cars with its halo-inspired center bar. It’s also based on the Mercedes-AMG SL 63, rather than a more limited-run supercar like the Moss SLR. As such, a different company has decided to build another Moss tribute that Mercedes doesn’t seem interested in, and it looks amazing.

Even Prettier Than The SLR Stirling Moss

The company in question is the low-volume supercar company called Engler, and the car is called the Mosslr. It’s clearly a combination of Moss and SLR, though it looks and sounds a little odd. That doesn’t matter, because the car is gorgeous. The front end looks impossibly low, and the curvy fenders pumped up as much as possible. The required lack of windshield, dual rear cowls and fender-exit exhaust are all there. The rear taillights are also thin and graceful, curving around the long, swept-back tail. At the front, you can see the Mercedes inspiration with a wide, frowning grille like that on AMG GT models. The wheels also call back to the SLR with their turbine design. Genuinely, we could see this wearing the three-pointed star without anyone questioning it. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, since the lead designer, Vladimir Loktionov, is a major fan of the SLR, saying:

“I’ve been drawing cars since childhood. For me, they’ve always been more than just machines – they’re art, living emotion, and a reflection of character and dreams. One of the greatest sources of inspriation for me has always been the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss. Its forms and proportions left a lasting mark on my soul – that’s where it all began”

As for performance, Engler promises the Mosslr will surpass the SLR, though the details are more vague here. Three different versions with different powertrains will be offered. Two will feature V8s, and the other a V12, though where the company is sourcing them is a mystery. We wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Engler ends up sourcing Mercedes engines, but that’s just speculation on our part. The base model, the Mosslr 750, will make 740 horsepower and have a top speed of 200 mph. The Mosslr V12, which is technically the top trim, is the second-most powerful with 838 horsepower and a top speed above 200 mph. The Mosslr 1000 also uses a V8, but it will make a monster 986 horsepower and top 217 mph. The company will build just 75 examples. No price has been given, but you probably know if you can afford one or not.

It’s Not The Wildest Car From Engler

The Mosslr is a radical machine, but Engler has produced even wilder cars. It made a name for itself with its SuperQuad vehicles. The name hints at what it was: a supercar with the driving, or rather riding, position of a motorcycle or ATV. The original ones featured a V10, and a later revised version adopted a V12. If anything, this more conventional Mosslr is less crazy. But the company’s ambitions seem to be growing. It also revealed a custom coachbuilt version of the Rolls-Royce Ghost called the CoupeTail. It features a unique body and just two seats, plus an extra 100 horsepower. Only 20 of those will be built. So, between the CoupeTail and the Mosslr, the company could end up quite busy with builds.
