You Won’t Believe How High This 10-Liter Drift Engine Will Rev

When it comes to drifting, there are a few engines you’ll see especially frequently. You’ve got six-cylinder Nissan RB- and Toyota JZ-series engines. Ford Coyote 5.0-liter V8 engines pop up, as do BMW six-cylinders. And, of course, there’s no end to the GM LS V8s. But drifter and YouTuber Adam LZ has different plans for his latest drift car build, a carbon-kevlar-bodied BMW M2. He has enlisted the help of Steve Morris engines in Michigan to build a GM-based V8. Instead of one of the small-block GM engines, though, they’re working on a big-block engine, and Adam’s latest video takes place at the shop to show where it was built and what it can do.

Enormous Displacement And Sky-High Revs

The engine Steve Morris created has a displacement of 632 cubic inches. That comes to a monstrous 10.4 liters. That’s more displacement than a pair of Coyote V8s, and a full 2 liters more than the last Dodge Viper V10. That’s only the start of the wild numbers. Despite the enormous displacement and equally large valves and pistons, this engine can rev. It tops out at 8,000 rpm, which is something we expect out of Honda engines with a fifth of the displacement and without pushrods.

Furthermore, the power is stunning. The video shows a couple of engine dyno runs, and it makes about 1,125 horsepower and 932 pound-feet of torque. The torque curve is absurdly flat, too, with gobs of twist even low in the power band. Did we mention that the engine is naturally aspirated? Steve, of the eponymous engine shop, says that his big block engines can make multiple thousands more horsepower with additional modifications, but apparently this lower number is what Adam is looking for, along with reliability. You can see and hear the engine for yourself along with other cool details about it in the video above, along with Adam’s car, and other vehicles and engines in the Steve Miller shop.

Steve Morris Builds Insane Engines

It’s clear that Steve Morris is able to create some amazing V8 engines, but they can do more than that. A little more than a decade ago, a company called Devel popped up claiming it would build a supercar with a 16-cylinder engine and 5,000 horsepower. Since its initial announcement, the company has occasionally appeared with more refined design prototypes and even some purported test footage. We still have doubts the car will ever really reach reality, but at least the engine did, and Steve Morris built it. It used two LS-derived blocks put together, along with a quartet of turbochargers. It ended up displacing 12.3 liters and did make the claimed 5,000 horsepower. You can even see a camshaft for the engine in Adam LZ’s video. Morris says in the video he doesn’t know what the status is of the engine, but it should be floating somewhere out there.
