His Mom Drove This Pontiac Firebird Less Than 1,000 Miles In 41 Years

  • A 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with under 4,800 miles is for sale.
  • This muscle car has had just two owners since new, one since 1984.
  • It features a 6.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 and a 4-speed manual.

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a quintessential piece of American automotive history. And if you’re someone who prefers a car that has barely seen any road time, this might just be your dream come true. A remarkably low-mileage example of this muscle car is now up for sale, having clocked fewer than 4,800 miles (7,700 km).

With just two owners since it rolled off the line, the latest keeper has been the proud owner since 1984. If you’ve ever thought you needed a classic Pontiac to make your life complete (don’t we all?), well, now’s your chance.

As a 1979 model, this Firebird Trans Am packs a meaty 6.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8 coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. This engine was good for 220 hp and 320 lb-ft (433 Nm) of torque back in the day, and while that’s nothing compared to a modern muscle car, those are still respectable figures. As a 10th Anniversary model, this car also features a limited-slip differential.

According to the seller, his mother drove this Trans Am less than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) since purchasing it 41 years ago with around 3,800 miles on the clock at the time, and it’s spent most of its life parked in a garage. Sure, vintage cars can be picky, often turning to rust and dust even if tucked away in a nice warm spot, but this Firebird still looks stunning. The original wheels and tires have survived, which is impressive in itself.

The silver paint job has very few visible scuffs and is complemented beautifully with red and black pinstriping. Perhaps even more remarkable than how good the exterior looks is how near-perfect the cabin is. It’s clad in light gray upholstery to complement the exterior and shows very few signs of wear. It even features Screaming Chicken motifs on the door panels. As with other Trans Ams, it also has removable glass roof panels.

A Few Small Issues to Tackle

Of course, this isn’t a perfect car. According to the listing on Cars & Bids, there are a few minor issues that will need addressing. Obviously, the tires are long overdue for a change, and the air conditioning system could use a little TLC. There’s also some rust showing up on the suspension components, which might require attention before you take it out for a spin. Nothing too major, but definitely worth noting.

That said, this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am could be the perfect addition to your collection if you’re after a low-mileage classic that hasn’t been ruined by time. It’s a car that’s seen very little action, and with just a few minor tweaks, it could be as close to perfect as any vintage muscle car can get. You can check out the listing over here.
