If You Can’t Afford A Whole Ferrari, You Might At Least Get The Best Part Of One

Ferraris are really expensive. Some of them are even becoming more expensive this year. As such, few, if any, of us at CarBuzz could afford one, and we wouldn’t be surprised if that applied to many of our readers. Something that might be more manageable, though, would just be a piece of a Ferrari. That brings us to this unusual coffee table that will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s. It’s not cheap either, but it’s definitely more attainable than a whole Ferrari, and it’s one of the best bits of one.

Perfect For Your Espressos

The table you see before you was created using a 3.6-liter, double-overhead cam, naturally aspirated V8 from a Ferrari 360 Modena. The engine would’ve made 395 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque originally, but it won’t make any of that anymore. In addition to the fluids being drained, all the pistons, rods, cams and crank have been removed in order to make the table lighter. Since this engine was being permanently transformed into furniture, this makes sense, and it still looks complete from the outside. It even still has the branded covers for the cam gears and timing belt. The top of the intake manifold and the valve covers are also finished in bright red, and the block and heads have been polished. The polished parts are easy to miss, though, since custom stainless steel headers have been made for this table, and the bundles of metal are mesmerizing.

It’s not just the engine that’s used for this table, but the transmission, too. It’s the F1 automated sequential transmission. It’s not a transmission that’s well-loved, since it was a very early sequential unit, so it’s not a travesty to turn one into a table. Like the engine, all the gears and the clutch have been removed, and the case has been polished. Because of the odd combined shape of the engine and transmission, the table features two levels of tempered glass. The builders of the table also included etched signs with information about the engine and the car, and apparently the top-most surface was shaped to look like a 360 Modena from above.

Once you’ve hit your peak, it’s time to play the classics.

Cheaper, But Not Cheap

Naturally, a literal fraction of a Ferrari will cost a fraction of the value of a whole Ferrari car. But it’s better to think of this as a sort of Ferrari art piece, rather than competition for something you might get at Ikea. RM Sotheby’s estimates this table could go for between €15,000 and €25,000, which is between $16,895 and $28,158. For reference, Hagerty estimates a 1999 Ferrari 360 Modena in “Good” condition at around $84,700. So it’s a piece of Ferrari for a lot less than a whole Ferrari. Whether it’s a good value, we’ll leave to you. If it is, you’ll be able to bid on this on May 22 during the RM Sotheby’s Milan auction.
