It seems like every week we see the introduction of another seven-figure restomod project from Singer or other manufacturers. The one percent are spoiled for choice if they want a meticulously reimagined Porsche 911, but what about the average car enthusiast who wants an old car built to modern standards? To no one’s surprise, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is always the answer. A UK-based company called Rocketeer Cars just finished a recent funding round, and will now deliver its RestoBuild Miata to the United States.
To date, Rocketeer has delivered more than 30 finished vehicles and over 150 self-built kits for the Miata to turn it into a modernized classic. While utilizing existing partnerships in Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia, the latest round of funding will enable the company to deliver vehicles to the U.S., including two all-new variants that will debut in mid-2025.

The Rocketeer MXV6
If you are unfamiliar with Rocketeer’s work, you should become acquainted because it sounds epic to drive. Rocketeer ditches the Miata’s original four-cylinder engine in favor of a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 called the AJ30. This engine was originally developed by Ford and used in the Lincoln LS, but it was more commonly found in Jaguar vehicles like the S-Type, X-Type, XJ, and XF. Its lightweight aluminum construction actually makes it lighter than the original engine, and keeps the revvy nature. The new engine warrants a new name for the car: MXV6.

The stock state of tune delivers 280 horsepower, but Rocketeer says it can dial the output up to 375 hp. That version can even rev to an S2000-like 9,000 rpm. Rocketeer offers the MXV6 packs for the first-generation NA and second-generation NB Miata variants.
Two New Projects
Rocketeer is in the late stages of development on two new models, including a third-generation NC model. The NC project will be delivered in mid-2025 with the V6 engine tuned to produce 300 hp as standard. Rocketeer expects the NC to make up the bulk of its production, given the number of NCs currently on the road. No other details were provided about how the NC’s interior will be customized. Perhaps it will be similar to the custom ND Miata from Gisèle Racing.

The company also announced a more extreme variant called the Rocketeer Keiryō (Japanese for Lightweight). A client commissioned Rocketeer to create the lightest possible MXV6, weighing only 1,870 pounds. With the 375-hp V6, that results in a power-to-weight ratio of 441 hp per ton, the same as a Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari F40 (which, incidentally, may soon be reimagined by Maranello itself, too). More details will come closer to the launch date.
