Jeep Won’t Say If The New Compass Will Ever Come To America

After pausing production plans in Canada this past February, Stellantis is still reassessing its strategy for the compact crossover

Jeep Won’t Say If The New Compass Will Ever Come To America

  • Jeep unveiled the redesigned Compass in Europe, but hasn’t confirmed US availability.
  • It was originally set to be built in Canada, but Stellantis decided to reassess their plans.
  • Trade tensions and tariffs complicate Stellantis’ decision-making for North America.

Jeep unveiled the redesigned Compass in Europe last night, but it’s unclear if the crossover will eventually be offered in America. While this would typically be nothing more than a formality, Stellantis tapped the brakes at Brampton Assembly in February, which was set to build the compact-sized model.

At the time, a spokesperson told us they were reassessing their product strategy in North America to ensure Stellantis is offering customers a range of vehicles with flexible powertrain options to best meet their needs. As part of this effort, they decided to temporarily pause work on the next-generation Compass.

Fast forward a couple of months and the Compass was recently unveiled with a blocky new design, a minimalist interior, and an eco-friendly powertrain lineup that includes hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric options. This provides a “powertrain for every need” as there are front- and all-wheel drive models with outputs ranging from 145 hp (108 kW / 147 PS) to 375 hp (280 kW /  380 PS).

While that’s great for Europe, we’re interested in whether or not the model is coming stateside. We reached out to Jeep and were told the company is continuing to assess the situation. That’s a not so subtle reference to President Trump’s trade war and hazy tariff situation, which makes product planning extremely difficult.

When asked for a direct answer on whether or not the new Compass was coming to America at some point in the future, a spokesperson told us, “We will announce more information in due course.” They added, “Given how fast and dynamic the environment is, we continue to assess our product rollout strategy and will share more in the future.”

Trump And Carney Meet, Talk Trade (Kind Of)

All of this seems to suggest Stellantis isn’t sure what happens next. This shouldn’t be too surprising given Trump’s unpredictability, but Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was at the White House today and it was an awkward encounter that didn’t seem to accomplish much.

Instead of hammering out a deal or laying the foundation for a good working relationship, Trump suggested Canada should become the 51st state. This resulted in Carney telling him Canada is “not for sale” and “won’t be for sale ever.”

Getting back to trade, Trump suggested the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement might not be necessary anymore. However, he later implied “subtle changes” were possible when it’s up for review next year.
