The company behind the coolest restomod unveiled in 2024, the HWA Evo, is taking its engineering prowess to a whole new level. Having already tuned the Mercedes-Benz 190E way beyond being a homage to the iconic Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, HWA has turned its attention to paint. We’ve already seen the bespoke Silver Thistle, a metallic green based on the original Mercedes paint from the 1980s, but HWA isn’t stopping there. The company is promising more period-correct colors as well as “a near-limitless selection of bespoke finishes.” According to HWA, applying the new colors will take up 1,000 hours per car.

“We worked with new pigments and decided to take a very fine silver colour [sic] and marry it together with some extreme green pearl pigments. Following 28 test samples to produce the optimum outcome, the end effect is a very dynamic paint which retains the character of the original across flat surfaces, but really reflects the light at sharp edges, accentuating the imposing angles of the HWA EVO.”

– Marc Bree, Head of Paint Shop, HWA

The base colors for the HWA EVO will be White, Red, and Black, with the launch colors being based on heritage paint – Blue-Black and Silver. Following that, HWA will make what it describes as “tiers of exclusive paints” available, including the new Silver Thistle. Customers will also be able to work with the paint shop to create a signature finish. According to Bree, HWA can do anything technically possible in the paint world.

The company behind the coolest Mercedes 190E restomod is moving on to the next level: making its own hypercar.

Light Up Paint

One of the examples HWA gives of what it can do with paint comes from a customer’s car. The paint shop painted the owner’s initials on the side using “many different liquid applications,” including some with copper in them. The result is paint that can be illuminated with an electrical current every time the owner turns the headlights on.

“Having initially only painted race cars, the commissions to build limited-run Mercedes-Benz projects saw us starting to paint at this level for the first time. Owners of those cars soon started reaching out to us for one-off specialties, and that’s when we began to broaden our horizons.”

– Marc Bree, Head of Paint Shop, HWA

Going Racing

There will only be 100 HMA Evo road cars produced, but HMA will be taking the car racing. It already features an integrated roll cage and DTM-specification suspension, double wishbones and electronically adjustable dampers, and a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 450 horsepower.

Two will make their racing debut at the 2026 Nurburgring 24 hour race, which is apt as HMA has a lot of experience racing. It was founded about 25 years ago by Hans Werner Aufrecht, who German tuner aficionados will recognize as the A in AMG.

There’s Only One Street-Legal Pagani Huayra R, And It’s Headed To America

Lanzante turned the hardcore Huayra R into a road car without Pagani’s blessing, and so far there’s only one of them.

After AMG was sold to Mercedes-Benz in 1999, HMA was put together to run all of Mercedes’ race programs barring Formula 1. HMA was also responsible for the incredibly exclusive – and not just a bit crazy – SL65 Black Series, engines for Pagani, and a handful of low-volume hypercars. In racing, HMA is Mercedes to the core and responsible for everything from GT3 to Formula E successes. The HMA Evo is the first car made with its own badge, though. Something tells us that it’s going to be the car to watch at the 24 hour Nurburgring race next year.
