Maserati’s Next Supercar Has A Name, And It May Come Sooner Than You Think

When we run across trademark filings from automakers, they’re often for models that are far off into the future. We don’t think that’s the case with this World Intellectual Property Organization filing from Maserati. We think the car associated with this name will actually be revealed sometime this year. That would also mean that, since we’re nearly halfway through the year, we could see it in the next six months.

The Name Isn’t Exciting, But It’s Fitting

Maserati’s filing is for the name MC25. Obviously, it continues the “MC” nomenclature from the MC12 and the current MC20. As for the number, that’s what leads us to believe it will be revealed this year. The current MC20 was revealed in 2020, so logic dictates the MC25 will be shown in 2025.

It Might Be An Updated Version Of The MC20

Of course, the name alone doesn’t tell us much about the vehicle, besides that it will be a Maserati supercar. Between the logo design and some other rumors, though, we suspect it will be an evolution of the current MC20. The logos might be the strongest connection, since they’re nearly identical from the font to the proportions. The only major difference is swapping the “0” for a “5.”

Then we come to recent reports about Maserati’s plans for the MC20. It sounds as though Maserati may be working on an upgraded version of the car with more power and updated styling. Plus, that model is meant to appear in the second-half of this year. That lines up with a 2025 reveal date for the MC25, and if the car is revised enough, it would be entirely reasonable for Maserati to update the name, too. Plus, a revised version of an existing car seems far more feasible in a short period of time than a completely new car.

The MC20 Folgore seems to have been a big waste of time and money.

Based on that report, we could see this MC25 top 700 horsepower. The MCXtrema, which is based on the MC20, already makes more than 700 ponies, so that target number isn’t out of the question by any means. It will almost certainly continue to use a version of the twin-turbo Nettuno V6, rather than electric power, which had previously been planned for the MC20. Any styling changes will probably be modest to retain the basic chassis and hard points. We also would place our bets on a reveal sometime around Monterey Car Week, as both the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and The Quail have become popular locations for high-end car companies to show off new models.
