Porsche’s Nürburgring Killer Is About To Make The Mustang Look Like A Shetland Pony

It feels like forever since the last time Porsche offered the pinnacle of the 911 lineup. The 992-series of the classic sports car first arrived in 2019, and while now we’re on the refreshed 992.2, there is still no 911 GT2 RS. It looks like, though, one is finally getting closer to showrooms and racetracks. The CarBuzz spy photographers have captured a nearly completely undisguised 911 testing at the Nürburgring that looks very much like it is the better late than never GT2 RS.

This isn’t exactly the first time we’ve seen the hottest of the 911s. In 2023, a car very similar in appearance was spotted on the ‘Ring. The car in those pictures, though, was disguised much more heavily with a mix of add-on panels and some details like the center-mount tailpipes that shouted GT3 RS, not GT2. However, our spies could tell by the sounds from the turbochargers that it was, in fact, not a GT3.

Not sure what we mean? Check out the noises here from when the car was caught on video circling the ‘Ring. It still had the center-mount pipes, but it’s easy to hear the turbos do their thing over the combustion noises.

The car is now more obviously a GT2 RS. It has the car’s signature fender vents and flares for the massive tires, it has its tailpipes out to the sides instead of dead center, and – this one is important – the car is fitted with a roll cage in the back.

This Porsche 911 Turbo Proves The GT2 RS Will Be Insane

If rumors are to be believed, the 911 Turbo will have a price nearly as scary as the GT2 RS, but also loads more power than we’re used to.

It also has huge hood vents, a very low ride height, and that huge rear wing. The wing looks to be the same one as the one used on the GT3, but on this car, it seems almost restrained.

Final Engine Is Still A Mystery

We still don’t know what will power this new 911 GT2 RS, other than that it’s a safe bet it will have a flat-six in the back. The last car came with a 3.8-liter version that made 691 horsepower. It’ll need to make more than that, since the lowly 911 Turbo S now makes 640 hp, and you can’t have the GT2 be so close.

The current rumor mill says that the GT2 RS will have a hybrid system to boost its output. It wouldn’t be the first road-going hybrid 911; that honor goes to the latest GTS. Its T-Hybrid system has a 53-hp electric motor, which could boost the GT2 to well over 700 horsepower. The question, though, is whether that system is up to the track use expected of a GT2 RS.

Factory-backed upgrades make the RS cars even meaner.

Reports also say that the new 911 GT2 RS will be expensive. A leak in March said that the next uber-Porsche would cost around €450,000. That’s around $488,500. Serious cash, that – almost double the price of a 911 GT3 RS. Of course, the GT2 is going to be a much rarer offering – Porsche built just 1,000 in 2018, the last time around. The same report said that the model was set to arrive in June 2026, meaning the full reveal should happen sometime at the start of that year.
