Maybach’s SL680 Monogram Is Like Louis Vuitton On Wheels

  • The Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram features a 577-hp twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
  • With logos plastered everywhere, the convertible redefines how much branding is too much.
  • Rumors suggest the SL680 Monogram will cost around $250,000, $65,000 more than the SL63.

Last year, Mercedes-Maybach introduced the ultimate iteration of the SL-Class called the SL680 Monogram, a car so luxurious, it’s practically dripping with wealth. After a sun-soaked press event in Ibiza, Mercedes has now showcased the convertible in two distinct configurations. If you’re the type of person who likes to cruise the French Riviera with sunglasses on and ego inflated, this may be your new favorite ride.

The first example in the photos is similar to the one presented last year, painted in Red Ambience, which looks absolutely splendid under the Mediterranean sun. The Obsidian Black Metallic hood features 307 Maybach logos, and, like other models from the Mercedes division, it’s adorned with plenty of stylish chrome accents, including those on the grille, front bumper, side skirts, and elements of the rear fascia.

Next, we have a White Ambience version of the SL680, which also flaunts the signature black hood and shiny chrome details. But this time, it sits on a set of 21-inch wheels with a five-hole design. Small but noticeable differences for the discerning customer who insists on customization, even in their car’s wheels.

Monogram Madness: Is Less More?

If there’s one thing that stands out in these photos, it’s the monogram. Much like Louis Vuitton products, Maybach has gone absolutely wild with their branding, plastering their logo all over the place, like that one person who insists on wearing a t-shirt covered in tiny, repeated logos just to prove they can afford the name.

The hood? Drenched in Maybach’s signature badging. The lower front grille? Yep, more logos. The fabric roof? You guessed it. Even the roof cover has been treated to the same pattern overload. And let’s not forget about the seat backs and various other “key” places where the logo pops up. Mercedes has apparently taken the whole “branding everywhere” thing to heart, following a similar trend in other recent models like the CLA. Subtlety may not be the point here.

Performance or Just Comfort? You Decide

All SL680 Monogram models will be sold with the same basic 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in the regular SL63. That means 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. All-wheel drive? Check. This setup allows the SL680 to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in a respectable 4.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 162 mph (260 km/h).

But let’s be honest, if you’re buying this car, you probably won’t be racing anyone. Performance is great, but it’s the luxury and comfort that matter.

Speaking of comfort, the SL680 isn’t built for track days. Instead, it’s designed to soothe and pamper. It comes standard with semi-active hydraulic roll stabilization, new damper valves, and bespoke springs that are softer than normal. Engineers have also added more insulation to reduce road noise and optimized the exhaust with added insulating materials, ensuring it’s nice and quiet.

The Price: Don’t Ask, Just Buy

So, how much does this all cost? While official pricing has yet to be confirmed, early rumors suggest the SL680 will start at around $250,000 in the U.S. That’s about $65,000 more than the regular SL63, so you’d better have deep pockets or a rich uncle who owes you a favor.
