This RX-7 Is One Rad Retro Show Car

If you’ve been looking for some sweet custom Mazda RX-7s, now seems to be a good time to find them. We ran across a monstrously powerful example with a classic body kit just a few days ago. Now we’ve found another example. This one doesn’t seem to be nearly as powerful, but it’s just as striking, if not more so. It’s also a great tribute to Mazda’s history.

A Retro Body And Retro Graphics

Like the last custom RX-7 we featured that’s up for sale, this one has a particularly bold body kit. It’s a Pandem Boss kit, and the company also operates with the name of Rocket Bunny. The company is well-known for wild widebody kits, and this RX-7 one is one of the wildest. The front end is completely changed to look not like an RX-7, but rather the RX-3, a compact Mazda offered in coupe, sedan and wagon forms in the 1970s. It also featured rotary engines, and it had its own motorsports history all its own years before the first RX-7 launched. The 1970s nose looks a little strange on the curvy, lithe shape of the third-generation RX-7, but somehow, it works. This isn’t the only retro kit from Pandem, as it has a kit with a more Nissan-inspired ’70s front end for the S14 Silvia and 240SX.

This car also received a vivid striped paint scheme. Even without context, it looks great, but it also has roots in Mazdas of the past. Mazda used this livery on various race cars, particularly rally cars, through the 1980s. Meanwhile, the stance is thoroughly modern, courtesy of the huge fender flares and air suspension that allows the car to sit extremely low on the retro-inspired Tiltworx wheels.

Other Details And The Price

This RX-7 does look striking, though it seems that the powertrain is relatively unchanged. The photo of the engine bay shows that the car still has all of its factory plumbing for the original twin-turbocharger system. But with around 250 horsepower and incredibly smooth power delivery, the stock RX-7 powertrain is still a sweet one even after all these years. We can spot large drilled and slotted AP Racing brakes through the wheels, though, so stopping power has certainly increased. Also interesting is the fact that this is a Japanese-market car. So the steering wheel is on the right side, and this car has the rear seats that weren’t offered in the US. It even has some show history, having appeared at the Japanese Classic Car Show. The car is currently listed for $60,000, and that falls comfortably within values for clean stock models, let alone nicely customized ones.
