Cadillac’s $300k Answer To The Rolls-Royce Spectre Will Be Even Rarer Than Expected

Cadillac has been making some interesting moves lately, like teasing a Cadillac supercar concept, or getting back into endurance racing, or how about the move way, way upmarket with the flagship Cadillac Celestiq electric sedan, which is finally going into (very) limited production? It’s clear the company is looking to build its reputation back up through more sporting and luxurious products, and it’s interesting that it’s going in both directions at the same time, even if the brand’s plan is to be careful not to move too quickly.

That’s apparently the sales strategy for the 2025 Cadillac Celestiq, which is beginning to be hand-built at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan after originally debuting back in 2022 as a wild concept car. The automaker has also now confirmed that the first full year of production will be limited to just 25 cars, and out of those, not even all of them have been allocated to a buyer yet.

Extremely Limited Celestiq Production, And Potentially Low Demand

That’s a far cry from the projected eventual annual production rate of 500 cars that was mentioned previously, but that may have simply reflected the max potential output of the renovated technical center that assembles the car and not the actual planned volume for sale. The company says it is capable of building two Celestiqs per day right now.

One Of Cadillac’s Biggest Failures Ultimately Saved The Brand

No pain, no gain, right? This was a painful blessing in disguise.

Cadillac Chief Engineer Tony Roma promised the company had “many, many more” buyers than it could satisfy for the first 18 months of production back in 2022, so it’s shocking to hear they have not allocated all 25 intended cars being built this year yet. Either that was a misrepresentation, or something has dramatically changed in the marketplace for Cadillac’s prospective Celestiq shoppers.

In a recent interview with comedian Jay Leno online, Roma offered: “We’re not announcing the exact volume, but think more like hundreds, not thousands” across the planned lifetime of the car, which is unclear.

Celestiq Versus Spectre And Taycan

The Celestiq so far comes in one powertrain configuration for all models sold. It features a 111-kWh battery pack good for an EPA-estimated 303 miles of range on a full charge. It also generates 655 horsepower and 646 lb-ft of torque through two electric motors powering all four wheels. The 0-60 mph acceleration time is said to be around 3.8 seconds, and pricing is far north of $300,000, though no exact figure has been offered yet.

Don’t Believe The Fake News: Restarting Your $300k Caddy Isn’t That Hard

No, jumping the dead 12-volt battery on a Cadillac Celestiq doesn’t actually require you to crawl through the trunk.

Compare the Celestiq to its main competitor, the Rolls-Royce Spectre EV, which was reported to have sold out its first year of 2,500 EVs in 2024. The first-ever all-electric Rolls makes 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque sent through all four wheels, with a full-charge EPA-estimated range of 260-290 miles, and it’s priced from $420,000.

You could also save a significant chunk of change and opt for something like the Porsche Taycan, where the Turbo trim is probably the best balance with 697 hp (and even more with the equipped overboost feature), 656 lb-ft of torque, a 0-60 sprint time of 2.5 seconds, and around 290 miles of estimated range for less than $200,000.
