Toyota Is Making The GR Corolla More Extreme, And Soon

Everybody loves the GR Yaris and its slightly bigger sibling, the GR Corolla from Toyota. The modern performance bargains are a rare treat, and now it looks like Toyota is cooking up an even hotter flavor of the latter for us to enjoy soon, with more cooling and a bigger wing, at least.

Toyota has revealed images of a camouflaged development vehicle that serves as a tease for a hotter, torquier, and tauter take on the GR Corolla, giving us just enough information to whet our appetites.

Getting An Early Look

Toyota’s latest teaser comes ahead of the Formula Drift Long Beach weekend, with a short press release and a few images of a camouflaged GR Corolla hatch with some modifications published online. The images show the hot hatchback with a new rear spoiler on the tailgate above the rear window, with additional fender vents and hood vents seen and specifically outlined as well.

The wheels and suspension setup don’t scream out as new, but we have 18-inch black 10-spoke wheels here, and we can’t get a good look at anything from the interior, either. That said, with the rear windshield wiper deleted, Toyota is pulling out all the stops. Does this mean no rear seating, like the previous top-spec GR Corolla, the Morizo Edition?

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing engineering has been incorporated into multiple models in Toyota’s ranks. These are the most potent GR models ever made.

We can’t be sure, but we don’t see a roll cage in what Toyota is calling a “development vehicle” – at least for now. The automaker only said that “a bump in torque and unique tuning” would set this model apart, with no more specifics provided.

More GR Corolla Prototype Details This Fall

The current GR Corolla is powered by a 1.6-liter inline three-cylinder engine good for a surprising 300 horsepower, and torque has recently been updated to 295 lb-ft. Presumably, it’ll now exceed 300. At the moment, it’s available with either a six-speed manual transmission as before, or a new 8-speed automatic for a slight price premium of $2,000. The base GR Corolla starts at $38,860 with the manual.

Each of them does stuff the others can’t.

The teaser does promise this will be a track-focused model, possibly track-only (though that seems unlikely given there’s a Supra racecar for that sort of thing), but we’ll have to wait and see. Regardless stands for Gazoo Racing, which is the team leading the development of this latest project. The new variant arrives this fall, Toyota promises, but perhaps we’ll get some teasers before then from which we can glean additional details.
