Immense Toyota Prius Sales Jump Shows People Want Sexy Hybrids

Key Takeaways

  • The Toyota Prius posted a 138.6% year-over-year sales increase for the first quarter of 2024.
  • The fifth generation brought better styling and quicker acceleration, although cargo space dropped slightly.
  • Attractive and affordable vehicles, whether electric, hybrid, or gas, are key to good sales.

The Toyota Prius was introduced in North America back in 2001, but the latest is by far the easiest to get behind. Society no longer attaches the “hippy” stigma to the car in a negative light, it looks great, and in Prius Prime spec, it’s quick enough to embarrass the unsuspecting GR86 driver. All of these factors have made the popular hybrid a 2024 CarBuzz Award winner, and that’s just one of many accolades the Prius has received in the short time since this new generation entered production in December 2022.

How popular is the Toyota Prius? According to Toyota’s sales figures for the first quarter of 2024, the Prius posted a year-over-year sales increase of 138.6%. That works out to an increase from 5,586 units in the first quarter of 2023 to 13,327 units for the first quarter of 2024.

The Prius Is An Excellent Product

Despite being on the market for over 20 years, the Toyota Prius is not slowing down. Toyota has been slow to move toward fully electric vehicles, but it does have one in production and several others waiting in the wings. The unconventionally styled bZ4X is an all-electric vehicle, but it only sold 1,897 units in the same period of time.

The brand’s patience will pay off big time in a few years.

Besides their vastly differing powertrains and prices ($44,420 versus $27,950), there are several factors that make the Prius easier to stomach. The Prius was all-new for the 2023 model year and is greatly improved from the prior generation. It can do 0-60 mph in well under seven seconds, it’s got a smooth ride yet respectable handling, and its got reasonable cargo space.

Demand For Hybrids Is Growing

The Prius has a lot going for it, and current market conditions are certainly key. Mustang Mach-E popularity is improving thanks to discounts, but it is still a long way off the pace of traditional auto sales. The Prius has needed no such help to achieve its remarkable sales increases. It has always been an excellent fuel-saver and a practical hatchback.

What it did need was a glow-up, and after it got one of the biggest with the fifth-generation XW60 at the end of 2022, it was only natural that the result would be a huge increase in sales.

Other automakers ought to take note; a good-looking, high-value hybrid seems like a winning recipe.
