Some Call It A Forgotten Legend, Others Say It’s The Greatest 911 Never Built By Porsche

  • Just 14 examples of the ultra-rare RUF CTR 2 Sport were ever produced.
  • Power comes from a 3.6L twin-turbo flat-six engine with 580 horsepower.
  • This specific car is expected to fetch between $3 million and $3.5 million.

RUF has a long and proud history of building some of the planet’s finest Porsche 911-based vehicles and in recent years, some of them have turned into highly-prized collector cars. Not long after one of RUF’s rarest models, the CTR Yellowbird, was sold for $6.1 million and another fetched $4.68 million, a different, yet still impossibly desirable, RUF creation is bound for auction.

The car in question is a 1998 CTR 2 Sport. The CTR 2 was the first model from the German brand sold in the United States and is based on a 993-generation 911. For as impressive as the standard model was, the company took things to a whole new level with the CTR 2 Sport, capped at just 14 units worldwide.

Race-Bred Performance, Street-Legal Attitude

Like the ‘regular’ model, the Sport rocks a 3.6-liter air-cooled, twin-turbocharged flat-six inspired by the Porsche 962 Group C racer. The engine was tuned to deliver 580 hp and sent its power through the rear wheels thanks to a six-speed manual transmission. Customers could opt for all-wheel drive, and that’s exactly what this example has.

Broad Arrow Auctions

This particular CTR 2 Sport is expected to sell for between $3 million and $3.5 million during next month’s Monterey Car Week. It was ordered new by Frank Beddor, the father of Steve and David Beddor, who were recruited to race two CT2R 2 Sports at the 1997 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The 911 remained in the Beddor family until 2007, when it was sold to a collector in New Jersey. It was sent back to the RUF factory and had a new green leather interior installed alongside an integrated roll cage, new seats, and a special steering wheel. Additionally, the car was fitted with new Bilstein PSS10 adjustable coilovers.

Rare Opportunity at Monterey

Broad Arrow Auctions is handling the sale of the car, and notes it currently has 16,679 miles (about 26,800 km) on the clock and was serviced by RUF North America earlier this month.

If you’re the kind of person who casually misplaces a few million in the couch cushions or simply enjoys browsing million-dollar machinery while eating cereal in your pajamas, you can check out the listing here.
