Alfa Romeo Could Surprise Fans With A Sports Car Built On Dodge Charger Bones

Described as a dream, the sports car will have to wait until the company gets on solid footing

  • An Alfa Romeo official hinted at the possibility of a premium sports car coming soon.
  • The model could arrive sometime after the brand launches the new Giulia and Stelvio.
  • Speculation suggests it could be based on the STLA Large platform and rival the M4.

Alfa Romeo fans haven’t had much to get excited about as the brand has a troubled track record with sports cars. The Fiat 124 Spider was originally conceived as an Alfa, while the 4C reportedly generated less than 10,000 sales. The company had also announced plans for a new GTV and 8C, before killing both off roughly a year later.

While we finally got a new supercar in the form of the 33 Stradale, that particular model is built by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and limited to a mere 33 units. Based on the Maserati MC20, the car is rumored to cost around $1 million and is bound to spend the majority of its life parked in the garage of collectors.

However, it appears Alfa Romeo hasn’t forgotten about more mainstream sports cars. Speaking to Car Magazine, the company’s marketing boss said “Any person working at Alfa Romeo will tell you that we would like to have another performance sort of reachable car.” However, Cristiano Fiorio stated the company has to “deliver” before focusing on “dreams.”

He went on to explain they’re a relatively small brand and don’t have the same resources as Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche. As a result, they’re focused on reestablishing the fundamentals before branching off into fun products that would likely generate more buzz than actual sales.

As Fiorio explained, “Doing one model every year, proving that we are able to execute, to make it profitable, to make numbers which are acceptable for the investment we have done. Once we have done a track record on that, then we can dream.” In essence, the company needs to nail bread and butter models such as the next-gen Giulia and Stelvio, before getting adventurous.

However, when a sports car finally arrives, it might not be a two-seater. Instead, the publication suggests it would be based on the STLA Large platform that underpins the Dodge Charger. This implies we could be looking at a coupe that might battle the BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG CLE 53. That sure sounds a lot like the ill-fated GTV, but only time will tell.

Interestingly, Fiorio suggested the 33 Stradale was approved because it was an after-hours project that didn’t impact anything else. He went on to say if the car would have caused problems, officials would have said ‘f*ck off. You are not going to do that.’
