The First SUV Scout Built Looks Like The Future

When you’re starting a new car brand, the look of the vehicle is everything. You could nail every other part of the equation, but if it looks like an Edsel, you’re doomed to repeat the failures of countless other attempts to sell cars. When your brand is all about heritage, it might be even more important. You need to nail the exact mix of classic detailing with modern aesthetics, tastes, and even safety, engineering, and manufacturing requirements.

The Scout Traveler and Terra concepts are excellent examples of doing it right. Now, as the two electrified workhorses get closer to production, the team at Scout Motors is showing off a little bit more about the concept model and the processes that got it to where it is today.

Scout Offers A Look Behind The Scenes

As Scout’s marketing team says, “bringing back an icon doesn’t happen overnight.” The process starts with a blank piece of paper (or a blank computer screen), inspiration, and some ideas.

The vehicle in the post pre-dates the Scout concepts that were revealed in 2024. It’s a model, used to help the design team work out what the final product will look like before going to full-scale, a step between clay and steel. It’s built for a part of the process where, as Scout says, the team is “obsessed with every curve, angle, beltline, and radius.”

Early Scout Terra/Traveler Orders Reveal Scout’s Genius Decision

The new Scout Motors SUV and pickup duo may be electric, but the Harvester range extender is proving to be Scout’s best decision of all.

It might be a model, but check out all of the details at this step in the design process. It has lights, it has all of the interior switchgear – even all of the vents and hinges look like what could be a final product, but not from the right materials. Of course, that’s because, if they pass review, they could be.

Box-Like Scout Says It Must Not Be “Generic”

Though there’s more than a little irony in the brand’s statement that the Scout models must be “not generic,” and “not a box.” That’s because the models they’re built to bring back to life were designed extremely generically and box-like. The International Scout and Travelall models were nothing if not boxy and square. Some models, especially in the early years, look like they would fit in perfectly in an insurance ad. You know, where they want to show cars, but they don’t want to identify a particular brand?

While initially launched as an EV-only brand, Scout quickly added extended-range plug-in models to its lineup. Those quickly became the majority of reservations, though production of a real car is still two years away.

How Does The Scout Motors Traveler SUV Compare To The Competition?

Scout Motors has unveiled its new pickup truck and SUV models. How does its SUV, dubbed the Traveler, compare to its main competitors?

Scout promises that the Terra pickup and Traveler SUV with a gas engine (called Harvester) will offer up to 500 miles of combined range between their electric battery packs and gas-powered range-extending engines.

Earlier this year, Scout CEO Scott Keogh suggested that larger and smaller gas tanks, as well as engine upgrades, could be in the cars. That engine will be a non-turbo four-cylinder made at parent Volkswagen Group’s factory in Silao, Mexico.
